Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is an operation performed using small and sensitive surgical instruments by monitoring the images obtained with endoscopic systems, without direct vision in an anatomical region with critical neighborhoods.

Today, it is one of the most current and frequently used treatment options for the treatment of chronic sinus inflammations, tumors originating from the sinus and anatomical structures adjacent to the sinuses, anterior skull base injuries, traumatic eye pit damage and visual nerve compression.

The most common place of endoscopic sinus surgery is chronic sinusitis that does not respond to medication used with appropriate content and time. During these operations, the inflamed tissues and polyps in the sinuses are cleaned, the channels where the epidemic produced by the sinuses empty into the nose and the nasal flesh are reduced.

In chronic sinus diseases;

– Removal of inflamed tissues and polyps

– Opening the channels that connect the sinus cavities to the nose

– Anatomical problems such as nasal swelling and air cysts (Konka bullosa), multiple discharge holes of the sinus cavities (accessory ostium), abnormal mucous contact areas are performed.

The fact that the anatomy is complicated in the narrow area where the sinuses around the nose are located and that the vital organs such as the brain, eyes, vision nerves, tear ducts, jugular veins are adjacent, requires significant experience and advanced technology in order to perform these surgeries successfully.

The endoscopic sinus does not suffer from severe pain after surgery, simple pain relievers are usually sufficient.

Sprays containing sterile saline, which mechanically cleanses the nose and moistens the mucosa, should be used until crusting passes.

Performing the dressing properly is very important for the success of the operation. The first control and buffer removal, if any, is done within 2-4 days. During the dressing performed at the end of the first week, the crusts formed in the nasal and sinus drainage canals are cleaned, if anti-adhesion materials are placed in the sinus, these are removed and the infection is checked. Patients should come to the controls at 1-2 weekly intervals until recovery is completed according to the size of the surgery.
